Frank Barnes, Ph.D, Laboratory Director

Dr. Barnes  began his career in the field of reproductive science in the 1970’s with a Masters degree from the University of Missouri and a Doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  His research continued at biotech firms in the 1980’s.  In 1993 he  trained at the prestigious Monash IVF, Melbourne, Australia where he was a member of the team that produced one of the first healthy children from an immature human oocyte that was matured in vitro.  He is also one of the early pioneers of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and embryo biopsy for preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A).

Dr. Barnes served as Executive Laboratory Director for Pacific Fertility Centers from 1994-2000. In 2000,  Dr. Barnes joined Dr. Zouves as Laboratory Director for Zouves Fertility Center.  He also founded IVF Labs, L.L.C., a Reproductive Medicine Laboratory consulting firm providing services and Laboratory Direction to IVF centers across the US.

Dr. Barnes has designed many embryology laboratories with the goals of maximizing both efficiency and safety.  The new ZFC facility was designed in 2008 and contains state of the ART equipment and environmental controls.  Embryologists who have trained under Dr. Barnes’ supervision are well respected and actively recruited by embryology laboratories across the US.  He has continued to innovate and to institute cutting edge technologies that improve pregnancy outcomes as they become available such as new embryo culture protocols, ICSI, assisted hatching, egg and embryo vitrification, and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A).
