Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found that men who eat lots of processed meat like bacon and sausage have lower sperm quality than men who don’t. Men who have a diet heavy in fish have better sperm and more of it.
Men who eat just one slice of bacon or sausage link a day have 30% fewer normal sperm than men who don’t, according to the study.Healthy white fish like halibut can improve sperm quality, researchers say.
Eating white fish had a positive effect on sperm shape, while eating dark meat fish like salmon and tuna upped sperm count.Researchers explained that it’s been known that healthy diets contribute to healthy sperm.
Previous studies have linked dairy products and carbohydrate-heavy diets with sperm decline.
A Harvard University study that followed one hundred fifty six men who were in troubled relationships has found that the men and their wives had trouble “creating babies” (or conceiving) due primarily to the male diets and the size and shape of their sperm.
The researchers determined that the men who could not easily get their wives pregnant tended to consume a “rasher” of bacon every day. That portion of bacon harmed or restricted male fertility.
Interestingly, the researchers also discovered that men who consumed “white” fish such as halibut or cod were far less likely to suffer from fertility problems. Those men ate fish at least two or three times each week.
The consumption of fish, according to the researchers, actually restored the fertility lost by men who ate bacon too frequently.
